Nyrebekkenbetennelse (pyelonefritt): Prognose

Som regel vil symptomene avta raskt ved behandling, og det vil ikke skje noen skade på nyrene. Dersom du ikke merker noen bedring i løpet av to til tre dager, er det imidlertid nødvendig med en ny kontroll, slik at man kan vurdere hvorvidt det er behov for å skifte antibiotikum.

Hos barn kan det oppstå nyreskader. Dette skyldes at nyrene er spesielt sårbare, særlig i det første leveåret. Dette er årsaken til at alle små barn utredes videre også ved førstegangs nyrebekkenbetennelse.

Utvikling av kronisk nyrebekkenbetennelse og eventuelt nyresvikt er meget sjelden på grunn av den effektive behandlingen med antibiotika. Blodforgiftning kan forekomme i alvorlige tilfeller.
