Ulike typer stamming

Stamming klassifiseres som utviklingsmessig, nevrogen eller psykogen. Utviklingsmessig stamming er den vanligste formen. Det oppdages hos barn i 3-8 års alder og utgjør mer enn 80 prosent av alle tilfeller med stamming i befolkningen. Cirka 80-94 prosent av førskolebarn med utviklingsmessig stamming blir bra av seg selv i løpet av fire år.

Nevrogen stamming skyldes vanligvis sykdom som hjerneskade eller hjerneslag. Psykogen stamming er en sjelden form, og den forekommer vanligvis hos voksne med problemer etter et psykologisk eller et emosjonelt traume; ofte er det ingen annen kjent årsak.
