Problemer knyttet til stamming

Personer som stammer, er ikke mer nervøse av natur enn andre, men de kan bli nervøse som følge av stamming. Uttalt stamming kan føre til frykt for å snakke, noe som kan føre til fysiske virkninger som for eksempel muskelstramninger og følelsesmessige effekter som forlegenhet og frustrasjon. Personer som stammer, kan også bli sosialt uthengt og kan oppleves som mindre flinke enn de som ikke stammer. Stammingen kan oppleves som et hinder for å få en jobb eller bli forfremmet, og stammingen kan hos noen påvirke utførelsen av jobben. Stamming kan påvirke selvfølelsen og selvbildet.
