Mikroskopisk kolitt: Årsak

Årsaken til mikroskopisk kolitt er ukjent. Man tror den skyldes en immunologisk reaksjon i slimhinnen. Ekspertene er usikre på hva som er den utløsende faktoren - galle, giftstoffer (toksiner), mikrober? Det er også antydet at medikamenter som NSAIDs, antidepressiver og protonpumpehemmere (syrehemmende medisin) kan være delaktig i sykdommen. Forskerne har også sett at jo kraftigere betennelsen i slimhinnen er, jo heftigere diaré.

Mikroskopisk kolitt forekommer hyppigere hos personer med autoimmune tilstander som leddbetennelser (artritt), høyt stoffskifte (hypertyreose), diabetes mellitus, sklerodermi og cøliaki. Forskerne har funnet at opptil 25% av pasienter med cøliaki også har mikroskopisk kolitt, men de blir ikke bedre på glutenfri diett slik som cøliakisykdommen blir.
