Fører stress til sykdom?

Sikre bevis for sammenheng mellom stress og sykdom vil kreve eksperimentelle studier der noen personer utsettes for stress mens andre ikke. Slike studier er imidlertid uetiske å gjennomføre, så vi må basere vår viten på svakere bevis. Det vil i praksis si befolkningsstudier (epidemiologiske studier) hvor man følger store befolkningsgrupper over tid og kan dele inn studiepersonene i grupper som opplever mere eller mindre stress for å se om de skiller seg ad når det gjelder sykdomsutvikling.
