Primær skleroserende kolangitt: Prognosen

Primær skleroserende kolangitt vil kunne føre til skrumplever (levercirrhose). Dette er en tilstand hvor leverens funksjoner opphører, og transplantasjon vil være nødvendig. Det er også økt risiko for å utvikle en krefttype i leveren kalt kolangiokarsinom. Jevnlige kontroller på sykehus er derfor viktige slik at eventuelle forverringer kan oppdages tidlig og behandles.

Hos de fleste utvikler denne sykdommen seg svært langsomt. Selv om sykdommen kan være livstruende, vil de fleste kunne leve normalt og det meste av tiden merke lite eller ingenting til sykdommen.
