Hepatitt B, kronisk: Årsak

Hepatitt B er en leverbetennelse med hepatitt B virus (HBV). Infeksjonen er symptomfri hos 70 prosent av voksne og 90 prosent av barn under 5 år, og den oppdages ved blodprøver. Inkubasjonsperioden fra smitte til sykdommen bryter ut er 1 til 6 måneder, i gjennomsnitt 75 dager. HBV finnes i blod og kroppsvæsker hos personer som er smittet. Smitte skjer gjennom blod eller ved seksuell kontakt. Viruset forårsaker betennelse som fører til skade av leverceller.
