Barretts øsofagus: Diagnostikk

Personer som har hatt syreplager over lang tid, bør få utført gastroskopi der legen kan inspisere slimhinnen og ta vevsprøver av den. Har du svelgevansker, smerter ved svelging, uønsket vekttap, blod i oppkast, bør du absolutt få utført endoskopi.

Diagnosen Barretts øsofagus er ofte synlig for legen som utfører gastroskopi, fordi sylindeepitel og plateepitel har forskjellig farge. Men sikker diagnose og gradering av skaden kan kun gjøres på grunnlag av mikroskopi av vevsbiter fra spiserøret. I vevsbitene ser man også om det er celleforandringer, såkalte forstadier til kreft.

Det finnes ikke symptomer eller tegn ellers som gir holdepunkter for diagnosen.
