Varicene i seg selv gir ingen symptomer. Men dersom de begynner å blø, vil det ofte gi kvalme, etterfulgt av blodig oppkast og mørk avføring. Noen merker forvarselsymptomer som brekninger og svelgvansker.

De fleste pasientene vil som regel på forhånd ha hatt fremtredende symptomer som kan tilskrives leversykdommen. Slike symptomer kan være gulaktig hud, utslett på hender, utvidete blodårer på overflaten av buken og økt mageomfang som følge av væskeansamling i buken (ascites).
