Ved kronisk leversykdom hvor man kan mistenke dannelse av åreknuter i spiserøret, vil dette kunne oppdages ved "kikkhulls"-undersøkelse av spiserøret (gastroskopi). Men ofte stilles ikke diagnosen før sykdommen debuterer dramatisk med kvalme og blodig oppkast. Ved slike symptomer anbefales rask innleggelse i sykehus. Tilstanden vil ofte være kritisk.
