Postpartum tyreoiditt er oftest en mild tilstand uten særlige symptomer. Høyt stoffskifte, hypertyreose, oppstår en til seks måneder etter fødsel og varer i en til to måneder. Lavt stoffskifte, hypotyreose, kommer fire til åtte måneder etter fødselen og varer i fire til seks måneder.

Perioden med høyt stoffskifte gir forholdsvis milde symptomer som hjertebank, irritabilitet og varmeintoleranse. Perioden med lavt stoffskifte er karakterisert ved generell slapphet, nedsatt intellektuell funksjon eller depresjon og kuldeintoleranse.

Humørsvingninger som oppleves etter fødselen, kan muligens være forårsaket av postpartumtyreoiditt.
