Skjoldkjertelbetennelse etter svangerskap: Årsak

Postpartum tyreoiditt oppfattes i dag som en akutt presentasjon av en underliggende kronisk autoimmun sykdom i skjoldkjertelen. Som ved Hashimotos tyreoiditt påvises antistoffer mot kjertelen (anti-TPO). Antistoffene angriper kjertelvevet, noe som i den tidlige fasen fører til at opplagret skjoldkjertelhormon (tyroksin) skilles ut i større mengder enn det kroppen trenger. Dermed oppstår en periode med høyt stoffskifte. Etter som lagrene tømmes, skifter tilstanden over til å preges av et lavt stoffskifte fordi kjertelvevet er skadet og kjertelen ikke klarer å produsere nok hormon.

Hos de fleste er postpartum tyreoiditt en forbigående tilstand, men en andel utvikler varig nedsatt skjoldkjertelfunksjon.
