Målet med behandlingen er å mildne eventuelle symptomer og tilføre tyroksin i tablettform hvis det er klare tegn på lavt stoffskifte.

Mildt forhøyet stoffskifte behøver sjelden behandling, men ved uttalte symptomer er betablokker aktuelt. Betablokker kan også brukes av kvinner som ammer. Behandling i fasen med lavt stoffskifte er vanligvis heller ikke nødvendig, men hvis fasen blir langvarig eller uttalt, kan tyroksintilskudd vurderes. Man vil forsøke å trappe ned og senere stanse behandlingen etter cirka seks til tolv måneder.
