Hva er lateksallergi?

Lateksallergi er en reaksjon på spesielle proteiner som finnes i lateks (naturgummi). Hvor mye lateks som trengs for å få en allergisk reaksjon, er ukjent, men dersom eksponeringen av lateks øker, øker også sjansen for å utvikle allergi. Hos sensitive personer kan symptomene inntre etter kun få minutter, men reaksjonen behøver ikke inntre før flere timer etter eksponering.

Reaksjonene kan være svært varierte. Milde reaksjoner kan være rødhet på huden, utslett, vabler eller kløe. Alvorligere reaksjoner kan være rennende nese, nysing, kløende øyne, sår hals og astma. I svært sjeldne tilfeller kan den eksponerte utvikle allergisk sjokk, noe som først og fremst skjer hos personer som også tidligere har hatt kraftige reaksjoner.
