Brucellose: Prognose

Inkubasjonstiden, tiden fra smitte til symptomdebut, er lang, ofte 2-8 uker, men den kan også være så kort som en uke. Sykdommen kan ha et kronisk svingende forløp. Men prognosen er vanligvis god. En regner også med at mange sykdomstilfeller forblir uoppdaget og går over av seg selv.

I unntakstilfeller kan man få bakteriespredning til de fleste organer i kroppen. De mest vanlige komplikasjoner er bein- og leddangrep (betennelser), betennelser i innerste lag av hjertet, og betennelser i hjernehinner/hjerne. Betennelser i hjertet forekommer hos mindre enn 1%, men er den formen som kan være livstruende.
