Brucellose: Årsaker

Sykdommen forårsakes av flere bakterier av arten Brucella. Bakterien smitter først og fremst ved inntak av ikke-pasteuriserte melkeprodukter, det vil si melk eller ost. Men kan også smitte ved direkte eller indirekte kontakt med kveg, geit, sau eller svin. Slakteriarbeidere, bønder og veterinærer i land der brucellose forekommer, er i større risiko enn andre for å få sykdommen. Smitte fra menneske til menneske forekommer i praksis ikke.

Inkubasjonstiden, det vil si tiden fra smitte til sykdomstegn, er variabel. I de fleste tilfeller kommer symptomene mellom to og åtte uker etter smitte.
