Sentral serøs retinopati: Årsak

Vi vet lite om årsakene til sentral serøs retinopati. Kanskje skyldes tilstanden en forstyrrelse i øyets årehinne, choroidea, da man ser at årehinnen er tykkere i syke enn friske øyne. Arv kan spille en rolle, men det er ikke godt kartlagt. Man har observert at stress, eller det å ha en stresset personlighetstype, disponerer. Det er grunnen til at tilstanden ofte blir kalt "stressøye". Man vet at bruk av medisiner med glukokortikoider (kortison), som ofte benyttes mot giktsykdommer, kan disponere for sentral serøs retinopati.
