Grå stær, katarakt: Prognose
De fleste opplever en gradvis forverring av synet etter hvert som linsen blir mer og mer uklar. Hvor raskt tilstanden forverrer seg, varierer betydelig fra person til person. Den typen grå stær som kommer etter skade på øyet, utvikler seg raskt.

Etter operasjon får de aller fleste like bra syn som de hadde før de fikk katarakt. Hvis øyet ellers er normalt, oppnår over 95% av pasientene normalt eller tilnærmet normalt syn. Hos noen finnes samtidig forkalkninger i netthinnen som først viser seg etter at den syke linsen er fjernet. Dette forklarer at noen ikke får fullgodt syn etter operasjonen.
