Sykehistorien er typisk. Det er særlig viktig for legen å kjenne til eventuelle risikofaktorer, slik som nevnt ovenfor.

Tilstanden påvises ved at legen undersøker øyet og linsens klarhet med et oftalmoskop. Fordunklinger i linsen vil ses som mørke partier i det røde øyet.
