Blodtrykk er viktig å følge fordi høyt blodtrykk over mange år er en viktig årsak til nyresvikt. I tillegg vil nyreskade ofte føre til økning av blodtrykket. Dette er en vond sirkel som kan bremses ved god og effektiv blodtrykksbehandling.

Vekten din er en god indikator på væskemengden i kroppen, derfor vil legen at du veier deg i forbindelse med kontrollen.

Ultralyd. Ultralyd brukes ofte i diagnostikken av nyresykdommer. Ultralydundersøkelsen foregår utenpå magen. I mange tilfeller kan man se at nyrene har skrumpet i størrelse ved kronisk nyresykdom, men de kan være normale eller forstørrede. Ultralyd brukes også til å diagnostisere avstegninger i urinveiene, nyrestein, samt til å vurdere blodstrømmen til nyrene.

Biopsi. En vevsprøve fra nyrevevet (biopsi) har en viktig plass i diagnostikken av nyresykdom i tidlig stadium, men er av mindre nytte ved langt fremskreden sykdom. Vanligvis kan en biopsi tas i lokalbedøvelse bare ved å føre en nål gjennom huden og inn til nyren. Etter en slik prøve kan det bli aktuelt at du blir til observasjon i sykehuset etter prøvetakingen.
