Divertikkelsykdom: Diagnosen

Når det foreligger symptomer som avføringsendringer, venstresidige kolikksmerter og luftplager hos eldre personer, kan man mistenke divertikulose. Dersom det i tillegg oppstår feber og mer uttalte smerter, er det forenlig med betennelse i divertiklene (divertikulitt).

Ingen laboratorieprøver er egnet til å bekrefte diagnosen.

Den foretrukne bildeundersøkelsen i utredningen av divertikkelsykdom er CT-røntgen. Det kan også være nødvendig med koloskopi etter episoder med komplisert divertikkelbetennelse. 

Utredning av uklare tykktarmsplager utføres oftest med koloskop. Legen fører da et rør (skop) inn i endetarmen og videre opp i tykktarmen slik at innsiden av tarmen kan granskes. Ved mistanke om betennelse, divertikulitt, vil legene i den akutte fasen unngå å gjøre koloskopi.
