Hvordan behandles skrumplever?

Levercirrhose oppfattes som en irreversibel tilstand, en tilstand som ikke kan bedres. Usikkerheten er at vi ikke vet nøyaktig når tilstanden blir irreversibel.

Noen leversykdommer responderer på behandling selv om det foreligger cirrhose. Derfor bør spesifikk behandling rettet mot underliggende årsak prøves. Pasienter med etablert levercirrhose på grunn av kronisk hepatitt C har økt overlevelse dersom de blir kvitt sin virusinfeksjon etter antiviral behandling. Overlevelsen for pasienter med levercirrhose bedres klart i gruppen som slutter å drikke alkohol.

Pasienter med cirrhose bør unngå ethvert stoff som kan forårsake ytterligere leverskade. Dette inkluderer stoffer som alkohol, paracetamol, medikamenter med leverskadelige effekter og visse urter. Motsatt kan det se ut til at behandling med statin (kolesterolsenkende middel) kan ha en gunstig effekt.

Eventuell behandling avhenger av hva som har forårsaket sykdommen. Du vil kunne få behandling for ulike alvorlige problemer som væske i bukhulen (ascites), infeksjon, forvirring, koma eller blødning fra åreknuter i spiserøret.

Hvis sykdommen er forårsaket av hepatitt, kan du trenge medisin i kampen mot infeksjonen. Dersom du har hatt sykdommen lenge, kan du trenge levertransplantasjon.

Levertransplantasjon er en mulighet når standard medisinsk behandling svikter i kontrollen av komplikasjoner til cirrhose. Det er imidlertid et betydelig misforhold mellom antall personer som kunne hatt nytte av levertransplantasjon og antall donorer.
