Retroperitoneal fibrose: Diagnosen

Sykdommen gir i tidlige stadier lite symptomer. Det er først når bindevevsmassen begynner å bli så omfattende at den trykker på eller klemmer andre organer, at den gir symptomer. Som oftest er det dumpe, vage smerter i siden eller i ryggen. Diagnosen stilles derfor som regel sent i forløpet, når komplikasjoner som avklemte urinledere fører til nyresvikt. I mange tilfeller virker sykdommen inn på kroppen, slik at pasienten opplever generelle symptomer som slapphet, lavgradig feber, kvalme, nedsatt matlyst, vekttap og muskelsmerter.

I mange tilfeller er blodsenkningen og CRP høy. Dersom nyrefunksjonen er påvirket, vil det gjenspeiles i blodprøver. I enkelte tilfeller finner man spesielle antistoffer i blodet (såkalte autoantistoffer som angriper eget vev).

Diagnosen krever bildediagnostikk. Ofte vil første undersøkelse være ultralyd og eventuelt vanlig røntgen. Det er imidlertid CT og/eller MR som stiller diagnosen mest presist.
