Retroperitoneal fibrose: Behandling

Målet med behandlingen er å stanse veksten av bindevev, forhindre eller lindre avklemning av urinlederne eller andre organer i retroperitoneum, dempe symptomer og hindre tilbakefall.

Hovedbehandlingen er kortikosteroider. De hemmer og driver tilbake betennelsen og bindevevsmassen og letter/slipper opp avklemmingen av organer. Steroidbehandlingen gir vanligvis rask symptombedring og fører ofte til redusert størrelse av den retroperitoneale massen og tilbakegang av komplikasjoner. Vanligvis må du behandles i cirka 2 år. Dersom denne behandlingen ikke hjelper godt nok, finnes det andre legemidler som også kan brukes til å dempe betennelsen og bindevevsdannelsen, såkalte immunhemmende midler. Ulempen er at dette er medikamenter som kan gi leie bivirkninger.

Noen ganger må du opereres for å lette trykket mot f.eks. urinlederne. Legene velger imidlertid som regel å foreta midlertidige inngrep, fordi sjansen er stor for at tilstanden bedres når kortisonet etter hvert får virket.
