Forkjølelse, symptomer og tegn
Tilstanden er karakterisert ved sår hals, slapphet og eventuelt lavgradig feber i starten. Voksne har sjelden feber ved vanlig forkjølelse. De tidlige symptomene forsvinner i løpet av få dager og etterfølges av nesetetthet, snue og hoste i løpet av 24 til 48 timer etter symptomstart. Nesetetthet og snue blir de dominerende symptomene. Nesesekretet (snørret) kan etter hvert bli tykt og pussaktig (purulent).

Symptomene er mest uttalte omkring dag 3-4 og begynner å forsvinne omkring dag 7. Barn i første leveår får ved forkjølelse ofte høy feber, de spiser lite, blir grinete og kan få urolig søvn på grunn av nesetetthet.
