Chagas sykdom: Diagnostikk

Sykdomen er utbredt i Latin-Amerika, og diagnosen kan stilles på bakgrunn av symptomene, når de er tilstede. Men svært mange er uten symptomer, og diagnosen kan da forbli skjult. I akutt fase kan parasitten påvises direkte i blodprøve, og i senere fase kan antistofftester vise om man er smittet eller ikke. Prøvene kan derimot ikke vise hvem som kommer til å bli frisk og hvem som senere vil utvikle kronisk sykdom.
