Diagnosen stilles på bakgrunn av sykehistorien og legeundersøkelse. Blodprøver støtter opp under diagnosen, og det vil som regel bli tatt røntgenbilder av lungene. Ofte vil det være aktuelt å ta en vevsprøve som undersøkes i mikroskop.
