Aids, når diagnosen stilles: Hvor lang tid tar det før aids oppstår?

Det er vanskelig å si hvor lang tid det vil ta fra du ble smittet med hiv til du begynner å få infeksjoner. Men i gjennomsnitt tar det 8-10 år fra noen med hiv som ikke behandles med medisiner, får aids. Med riktig behandling trenger ikke denne fasen oppstå. Medisiner som begynte å komme på slutten av -90-tallet har redusert sjansen for opportunistiske infeksjoner mye. Hiv/aids regnes i dag som en kronisk sykdom med god prognose.

Aids ble opprinnelig definert for overvåkingsformål før hiv var oppdaget. I dag er det klart at aids er et nokså tilfeldig punkt i den gradvise forverringen av immunsystemets funksjon hos de hivsmittede. Moderne behandling har gjort at aids kan utsettes og kanskje forhindres helt. Derfor har betegnelsen mistet mye av sin betydning, og legene kvier seg for å gi pasientene diagnosen.
