Helse blant lesbiske og bifile kvinner

Lesbiske og bifile kvinner nøler ofte med å fortelle legen om sin seksuelle orientering i frykt for å møte negative reaksjoner. Åpenhet rundt seksuell orientering kan være viktig i møte mellom pasient og lege.

Hva menes med lesbisk eller bifil?

Vanligvis refererer betegnelsen 'lesbisk' til kvinner som opplever seksuell eller følelsesmessig tiltrekning til kvinner, mens 'bifil' refererer til kvinner som opplever seksuell eller følelsesmessig tiltrekning til både kvinner og menn. Seksuell orientering kan omfatte tiltrekning, identitet og atferd. Det handler om seksuell orientering, som ikke har noe med sykdom å gjøre. Kvinner som har sex med kvinner (KSK), identifiserer seg ikke nødvendigvis som lesbiske eller bifile. Foretrukket terminologi varierer - lesbiske, lesber, homoseksuelle, homofile, bifile, biseksuelle, skeive.

Det anslås at 4,5 prosent av kvinner anser seg selv som lesbiske, mens andelen av bifile kvinner i befolkningen er mer usikker. Den seksuelle orienteringen kan skifte over tid.
