Forekomst

Et normalt svangerskap varer i 40 uker, og fødselen regnes å være til rett tid dersom den skjer i perioden 38-42 uker. Dersom et foster dør i mors liv etter 22 fullgåtte svangerskapsuker, eller fosteret veier mer enn 500 gram, kalles dette en dødfødsel. Dersom fosteret dør tidligere enn 22 svangerskapsuker, kalles det en abort. Grensen på 22 uker er valgt fordi ingen barn som er født før 22. svangerskapsuke er i stand til å overleve utenfor livmoren, selv med verdens mest avanserte nyfødtmedisin.

Dødfødsel forekommer i cirka 0,3 prosent -0,4 prosent av graviditeter. I Norge var det i 2014 totalt 263 dødfødte av 60.026 fødte, det vil si 4,4 dødfødsler per 1000 graviditeter.
