Føtalt alkoholsyndrom: Symptomer

Symptomene kan være svært varierende. I spedbarnsalderen kan barnet være dårlig til å ta til seg næring, det er veksthemning, barnet er irritabelt og er forsinket i utviklingen, f.eks. motoriske milepæler, forsinket tale og språkutvikling. De fleste opplever problemer knyttet til hjernen og nervesystemet.

Så godt som alle organer i kroppen kan bli skadet. Mange har et karakteristisk utseende i ansiktet. I tillegg til hjernen er misdannelser i øyne, ører, hjerte, mage-tarmsystem, nyrer, urinveier, muskler og skjelett vanlig.

Eldre barn har hovedsakelig problemer med lærevansker, sen utvikling, tale- og språkproblemer. Fra disse er det en glidende overgang mot de barna som er mentalt tilbakestående med betydelig hjerneskade.

I ungdomsårene er det økt forekomst av rusmisbruk, dårlige skoleprestasjoner, dårlige sosiale ferdigheter og kriminalitet.
