Sykehistorien gir sterk mistanke om diagnosen. Har du noen av risikofaktorene, styrkes mistanken. Legen vil teste synet ditt, både synsfelt og synsstyrke. Legen vil titte inn i øynene dine med et instrument som kalles et oftalmoskop. Det kan være aktuelt å lytte på hjertet og ta et EKG, samt å lytte på halsens blodårer. På sykehuset gjøres ultralyd av halskarene, eventuelt kan det være aktuelt å gjøre en spesiell røntgenundersøkelse, arteriografi, for å undersøke øyets blodårer.
