En sykehistorie med tap av synet over natten eller i løpet av noen timer, gir sterk mistanke om diagnosen. Mistanken styrkes om du har noen av ovennevnte risikofaktorer. Ved å lyse inn på netthinnen (med et oftalmoskop), kan legen se at det foreligger en skade på netthinnen.

Tilstanden behandles i øyeavdeling. Der vil man bl.a. gjøre fluoresceinangiografi, som er en slags røntgenundersøkelse hvor man undersøker blodårene i øyet.
