Nyrekreft, nyrecellekreft: Behandling

Hovedbehandlingen er kirurgi. Operasjon er førstevalg ved nyrecellekreft begrenset til nyren. Cellegiftbehandling har liten effekt ved spredning. En rekke nye behandlinger er tatt i bruk de siste årene og flere er under utvikling og utprøving. Støttebehandling og lindrende behandling vil være aktuelt ved spredning.

Fjerning av hele nyren, nefrektomi, er standardbehandlingen dersom sykdommen lar seg operere. Dette avgjøres gjennom forundersøkelsene. Valg av type operasjon bestemmes av størrelse, hvor svulsten sitter i nyren og eventuelt andre vurderinger.

Ved spredning til andre steder i kroppen kan det likevel være aktuelt å fjerne nyresvulsten dersom den gir sterke plager. Ved lokale symptomer på grunn av kreftspredning gjøres kirurgi og i noen tilfeller strålebehandling. Av og til velger kirurgene å fjerne en enkeltstående spredningssvulst (metastase), eksempelvis en enkel spredningssvulst i lungene. Det er imidlertid usikkert om det øker overlevelsen.
