Alkoholisk leverskade: Prognose

15-20 prosent av de som har drukket mer enn 80-120 gram alkohol per døgn i mer enn 5-10 år, utvikler leverbetennelse og/eller skrumplever. Man får som regel leverbetennelse før man får skrumplever, men noen kan også få skrumplever uten å ha hatt leverbetennelse. Dersom man slutter helt med alkohol og andre stoffer som belaster leveren, kan man klare seg lenge med redusert leverfunksjon.

I noen tilfeller kan det oppstå såkalt akutt alkoholisk leverbetennelse. Dette inntreffer gjerne i perioder med spesielt høyt alkoholinntak. Symptomene på denne tilstanden er spisevegring, brekninger, diaré, feber, gulsott og psykiske symptomer som skyldes påvirkning av hjernen. Prognosen er i slike tilfeller dårlig, med opptil 50 prosent dødelighet.
