Delirium: Årsaker

Delirium har en rekke utløsende organiske årsaker. Legemiddelbruk er en hyppig medvirkende faktor, særlig gjelder det bruk av opioider, kortikosteroider og midler som påvirker psyken. En infeksjon som for eksempel en lungebetennelse, kan føre til delir. Svulster eller spredning til hjernen kan være skyld i forvirringstilstander. Forstyrrelser i stoffskiftet, inntørring eller blodmangel kan også være utløsende årsaker. Plutselig stans i legemiddelbehandling med beroligende midler eller opioider (eventuelt også alkohol) kan utløse delir.
