Dette er en tilstand hvor det er få eller ingen symptomer. Blødninger fra tarmen eller forandret avføringsmønster, eventuelt magesmerter, vil ofte føre til utredning av tarmen. Den foretrukne undersøkelsen er koloskopi - endoskopisk undersøkelse av tykktarmen hvor endoskopøren i forbindelse med undersøkelsen også kan fjerne polyppene.

Polyppene vil vanligvis ikke finnes ved en vanlig legeundersøkelse. Unntak er polypper i endetarmen som legen noen ganger kan kjenne med en finger i pasientens endetarm (rektal eksplorasjon).
