Hepatitt, kronisk: Diagnostikk

Mistanke om diagnosen får man ut i fra de aktuelle symptomene og eventuelle opplysninger om tidligere sykdommer. Videre vil legen gjennomføre en grundig kroppsundersøkelse. Ved langtkommen kronisk infeksjon vil det foreligge kroppslige tegn på leversvikt i form av små blodårenøster i huden (spider nevi), røde håndflater, forstørret lever og milt, gulsott, hudblødninger.

Blodprøver er viktige i utredningen og vil kunne avdekke tegn til sviktende leverfunksjon. Den endelige diagnosen stilles ut i fra en vevsprøve som tas med nål fra selve leveren. Ved fremskreden leversvikt kan det foreligge "froskebuk" (ascites) og risiko for alvorlige blødninger fra åreknuter i spiserøret.
