Talassemier: Symptomer

Symptomene varierer ut fra hvilken type talassemi det dreier seg om. De fleste er bærere og vil aldri få symptomer. Andre kan ha milde symptomer på blodmangel, f.eks. blekhet, slapphet og dårlig kondisjon. Symptomene blir mest fremtredende i forbindelse med infeksjoner og betennelser.

Nyfødte som har alvorlig talassemi, vil få symptomer i 6 måneders alderen. De blir bleke, slappe og vokser dårlig. I de alvorligste tilfellene dør barnet allerede i mors liv.
