Nedkjøling, sykehusbehandling: Sentrale behandlingsprinsipper

Behandling av alvorlig nedkjøling må gjennomføres varsomt. Hjertet hos en sterkt nedkjølt person er ustabilt, og for mye styr med pasienten kan utløse rytmeforstyrrelse i hjertet og i verste fall død.

Samtidig er det viktig å prøve gjenoppliving på en pasient hvor det ikke påvises puls eller pust. Den alvorlige nedkjølingen gjør at en tilsynelatende "død" person kan gjenopplives uten at det behøver å ha tilkommet hjerneskade eller annen alvorlig skade på livsviktige organer. Det er også slik at den nedkjølte reagerer dårlig på behandlingen så lenge temperaturen er lav. Man forsøker å holde pasienten kunstig i live med hjerte-lungeredning mens man driver med ulike former for oppvarming. Først når temperaturen har nådd 30-32°C, kanskje helt opp til 35 °C, kan legene avgjøre om vedkommende er død. Den laveste kroppstemperaturen som er påvist hos et barn som har overlevd nedkjøling, er 14,2°C, og hos en voksen person 13,7°C.
