Kardiomyopati, svangerskapsrelatert: Årsak

Årsaken og de underliggende sykdomsmekanismene til peripartum kardiomyopati er ukjente, og mange teorier er foreslått. Ernæringsforstyrrelser, autoimmun sykdom, betennelsessykdom, virus, og andre teorier, har ikke ført til noen konklusjon om årsak eller sykdomsutvikling.

Vi er også usikre på hva som kan disponere for en slik sykdom. Det antydes at følgende faktorer kan øke risikoen: høy alder hos mor, flere tidligere fødsler, afrikansk opprinnelse, svangerskapsforgiftning, høyt blodtrykk, bruk av rihemmende middel og tvillinger. Men sykdommen forekommer også hos unge førstegangsgravide.
