Dersom man ikke kommer til målet med lokal behandling (øyedråper, nesespray), behandles fortrinnsvis med annengenerasjons antihistaminer. Noen av disse medikamentene kan også kjøpes reseptfritt på apotek eller i dagligvarehandel i små pakninger. Annengenerasjons antihistaminer virker i liten grad sløvende. Førstegenerasjons antihistaminer, som ble brukt mer før, har klart mer sløvende effekt, og også flere andre bivirkninger.
