Dette er et symptom som pasientene oppdager selv. Som regel er årsaken til legekontakt frykt for at det kan være en farlig sykdom som ligger til grunn. Hos yngre personer uten tilleggsplager finner man vanligvis ikke noe galt ved undersøkelse, og videre utredning gjøres ikke. Problemet forsvinner av seg selv uten behandling, og det er ikke nødvendig å ta noen forholdsregler.

Dersom det er tilleggsplager, er det oftest en infeksjon i prostata eller urinrør som ligger til grunn. I slike tilfeller er antibiotikabehandling aktuelt.

Den hyppigste årsaken er at det er tatt en vevsprøve fra prostatakjertelen - en prostatabiopsi.
