Angstlidelser går sjelden over av seg selv. Bedre innsikt i hvordan man selv reagerer kan gi en varig bedring. Medikamenter er til hjelp for noen, men gir sjelden en varig effekt. Symptomene dine kan komme og gå. Du vil ha perioder der du er bedre, og du vil ha perioder der du er verre. Mange som sliter med en angstlidelse opplever redusert livskvalitet.

Behandling kan bedre livskvaliteten. Det finnes gode behandlinger som kan hjelpe deg til å kontrollere dine bekymringer. Formålet med behandlingen er ikke nødvendigvis å gjøre deg helt angstfri, men heller at du skal leve bedre med din angst. Hvis du tror du har en angstlidelse, bør du søke hjelp. La ikke angstfølelsen styre livet ditt. Angst kan dessuten føre til andre problemer. Noen prøver å lindre angsten med alkohol eller illegale medikamenter, og dette er nok en viktig del av forklaringen på at hyppigheten av selvmord er økt blant de med generalisert angst. Det samme er risikoen for hjertesykdom - uavhengig av andre kjente risikofaktorer (som f.eks. økt blodtrykk) for slik sykdom.
