Utstående øyne - eksoftalmus

Eksoftalmus skyldes høyt stoffskifte, tyreotoksikose eller Graves sykdom. Behandlingen rettes mot å korrigere det høye stoffskiftet, eventuelt vurderes tilleggsbehandling

Hva er eksoftalmus?

Eksoftalmus

Eksoftalmus betyr utstående øyne. For høyt stoffskifte (hypertyreose eller Graves sykdom) er en sykdom der det produseres for mye av et hormon som kalles tyroksin. Sykdommen medfører i tillegg til diverse andre symptomer, også øyeforandringer av varierende grader; fra lette kosmetiske forandringer til mer påfallende endringer. Du selv og/eller pårørende kan ha merket endringer i utseendet i form av større, mer utstående øyne. Dette vises ofte i form av et karakteristisk, stirrende blikk. Du kan ha merket ubehag, svie og stivhetsfornemmelse i øynene samt tåreflod.

20-25 prosent av pasienter med Graves sykdom (Mb. Basedow), som er den vanligste årsaken til hypertyreose i Norge, har øyesymptomer når de oppsøker lege. Tre til fem prosent av disse kan få alvorlige symptomer.
