Hvordan stilles diagnosen brystkreft?
Utgangspunktet er som regel at kvinnen har merket en kul i brystet. Omlag ni av ti kuler som oppdages i bryst er godartet, og i en del situasjoner kan man bare ved å kjenne på brystene fastslå at det dreier seg om en godarta kul.
Dersom kulen er hard, knudrete, uøm, og eventuelt sitter fast i vevet rundt, styrkes mistanken om brystkreft. Ved den minste mistanke om brystkreft, henvises kvinnen til det nærmeste brystkreftsenteret, hvor trippeldiagnostikk gjennomføres. Først gjør en brystkirurg en utvendig undersøkelse av bryst og vevet rundt. Deretter tas en mammografi, som i noen tilfeller suppleres med ultralyd. Mammografi er en røntgenundersøkelse som gir detaljerte bilder av brystene og som kan bidra til å fastslå om en kul er godartet eller ondartet. Mammografi kan avsløre kreftsvulster som er for små til å føles med fingrene. Til sist tas vevsprøve, oftest med en tynn nål som føres inn i den påviste kulen. Vevsprøven undersøkes i mikroskop, og på den måten kan man fastslå om det dreier seg om godartede eller ondartede forandringer.
Inflammatorisk brystkreft er en sjelden og aggressiv form for brystkreft som opptrer hyppigst blant unge kvinner. Det foreligger rødhet, lokal varme og ømhet i brystet. Tilstanden utvikler seg raskt over dager til uker. Karakteristiske funn er inntrukket eller avflatet brystvorte og betennelsesforandringer i huden med "appelsinhud"-forandringer. I mange tilfeller foreligger spredning av kreften på diagnosetidspunktet. Tilstanden kan forveksles med vanlig brystbetennelse (mastitt).
