Årsak til krum rygg hos eldre

Det er vanlig å anta at hyperkyfose skyldes en kombinasjon av beinskjørhet og ledsagende brudd i ryggen. Studier viser imidlertid at slike beinbrudd (ryggvirvelbrudd, vertebrale brudd) finnes bare hos cirka 35 prosent av de med mest uttalt hyperkyfose.

Holdningsendringer kan også medvirke til økt krumning i brystdelen av ryggsøylen. Eldre kvinner er mindre i stand til aktivt å korrigere holdningen sin fra avslappet til "oppstrammet" posisjon.

Slitasje i mellomvirvelskivene er i noen tilfeller en viktig forklaring på den økte krumningen. Det samme gjelder tiltakende muskelsvakhet med alderen. Også slapphet i leddbåndene i ryggen kan være en forklaring. Disse leddbåndene gir stabilitet til ryggsøylen og er ved aldring utsatt for tap av elastisk vev, forkalkning og forbening.

Unntaksvis er arvelige faktorer forklaringen. Tidlig debut av hyperkyfose er knyttet til en del arvelige tilstander som osteogenesis imperfecta, Ehlers-Danlos' syndrom, Marfans syndrom, cystisk fibrose og Scheuermanns sykdom15.
