Vasomotorisk rhinitt er en eksklusjonsdiagnose, det vil si den stilles ved å utelukke andre årsaker til plagene. Det finnes ingen spesifikk test eller undersøkelse som bekrefter diagnosen.

Sykehistorien din med stadige perioder med nesetetthet og blank, vannaktig snue, vil være typisk. Plagene ligner på høysnue eller allergi, men de skiller seg fra dette ved at de oppstår hele året, og også hos personer som ikke er allergiske. Tilstanden regnes ikke som allergi, men det kan noen ganger være aktuelt å utrede om du har allergi - for å utelukke denne forklaringen.
