Alle former for vekstavvik avdekkes med sikkerhet ved en ultralydundersøkelse. De vanligste årsakene til at gravide sendes til en slik undersøkelse, er at lege/jordmor finner et avvikende magemål, eller at den gravide selv føler at magen vokser for lite.

Dersom man finner avvikende vekst hos fosteret ved en slik undersøkelse, henvises den gravide til fødeavdelingen. Alt etter hva man finner ved undersøkelser her, vil den videre kontroll av den gravide og fosterets vekst være et samarbeid mellom fødeavdelingen og den gravides primærlege.
